ILVO aims to support all stakeholders in Flemish poultry and rabbit farming, from the poultry and rabbit farmers, the supplying and processing industry, the distribution chain, to research and educational institutions, government authorities, consumers, and citizens with the above palette of expertise and a modern research infrastructure.
Poultry and rabbit farming
Main research questionThe KONSEMI project works on group housing in the rabbit sector, in particular on the question under what conditions it is possible to provide a regime of part-time group housing for does. Since 2016, meat rabbits must be kept in enriched group parks. For the time being, however, does are kept individually.
Summary Society increasingly expects social farm animals, including rabbits, to be housed in group, preferably in well-adapted housing in compliance with the animals’ species-specific needs. In Belgium, weaned meat rabbits are already housed in group in enriched multi-litter cages.
