Ecosystem based management for sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems

Main research questionThe ECOSCOPE project aims at improved fisheries management that balances a healthy marine ecosystem with sustainable fisheries. This requires a lot of diverse, accurate and up-to-date data that can be interpreted in a clear way by fishermen.

Genetic tool for Ecosystem health Assessment in the North Sea region

Main research questionSustainable use and management of marine resources is key for good ecosystem health. Monitoring for ecosystem health assessments is currently based on morphological species identification, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive and skills reliant.

National Data Collection Program in support of the Common Fisheries Policy and ecosystem approach.

The aim is to make a good estimate of the fish populations (stocks), the dynamics of the marine ecosystem, the possible consequences of fisheries management on fish stocks per se and on the marine ecosystem, using up-to-date data collection. This project fits in completely with the European fisheries policy.

Agroecological strategies for promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation by enhancing soil ecosystem services and sustainable crop production

Soils provide a vast array of ecosystem services and are thus essential to sustaining our planet's health. However, the effectiveness of these services is largely influenced by land management practices.

Ecosystem-oriented marine modeling and management

Marine ecosystems consist of ecosystem components (fish, benthos, mammals) that interact in a complex and dynamic way.

These models could be used to answer several questions on the human impact on the structure and functional components of the ecosystem within the ecosystem-based environmental impact assessment. Furthermore, using ecosystem models, we will develop indicators that evaluate and score the effect of human activities on the marine ecosystem.
