Biological experts of ILVO are identifying and counting all the animals in samples of the seabed. This task is crucial for monitoring the health of an entire ecosystem. It currently takes 3 full days to identify the animals in one sample of the seabed. In the GEANS project, a new DNA-based technique is being developed that promises to be much faster, cheaper and more accurate.
