General introduction

The VLAAMS POOTGOED (Flemish Seed Potatoes, VLAPO) project aims to develop a local potato seed production sector with technical, knowledge, and data support. The overall goal is therefore to strengthen Flemish seed potato cultivation and make it more sustainable. The quality of seed potatoes—the starting material for potato cultivation—is influenced by the genetic basis, cultivation conditions, and storage. By combining innovative cultivation techniques with knowledge sharing, the project aims to support seed potato growers in producing high-quality, virus-free, and profitable seed potatoes. In addition, regular consumption potato growers are being guided to start growing farm seed potatoes.

Research approach

The researchers are developing and testing cultivation innovations for higher yields and quality, and are working on measures to limit virus infection during propagation. In addition, an energy-efficient strategy for seed potato storage is being developed that preserves germination capacity and yield potential. Finally, a practical set of guidelines is produced to help potato growers optimize the value of their seed potatoes. The results are widely disseminated through working groups, demonstrations, publications, and audiovisual material.

Relevance/Valorization

By investing in local, high-quality seed potatoes, Flanders is strengthening its potato sector in the long term. The project increases the profitability and competitiveness of growers, while reducing the environmental impact of seed potato production. This lays the foundation for a sustainable and future-oriented seed potato chain in Flanders.
