General introduction

In the Flemish potato sector, there has been a noticeable increase in damage to (sweet) potato tubers caused by wireworms, which are the larvae of the click beetle Coleoptera Elateridae. There are two reasons for this increase: pressure on the use of crop protection products and changing climatic conditions. The CTRL-ELAT 2.0 project aims to develop an integrated IPM approach to the wireworm problem. Wireworms are very difficult to control. They have a long and complex life cycle, surviving in the soil for up to five years. They also have a wide host plant spectrum. Affected tubers lead to food waste and loss of market value, particularly for the fresh market and organic farming.

Research approach

The researchers have opted for a data-driven approach to wireworms: they are working on an innovative wireworm damage prediction and simulation model, linked to user-friendly applications. This will enable growers to assess the risk per plot and optimize their cultivation choices. Secondly, the remaining control options for conventional and organic cultivation are being evaluated: ground cover, tillage, variety selection, and biological and chemical pesticides. The project aims to develop a package of IPM measures tailored to potato growers, with broad implementation through the active involvement of growers and sector partners.

Relevance/Valorization

Potato cultivation is a major driver of arable farming in Flanders, with a production value of more than €500 million, a turnover of approximately €4 billion in the processing sector, and more than 5,000 Flemish growers involved. This project supports the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector. By focusing more specifically on control and thus limiting the damage caused by wireworms, we aim at better profitability and a lower environmental impact.
