General introduction
Consumer surveys show chickpea to be one of the best known legumes, known from processing in falafel and humus, among others. Since 2020, the crop has been sown by Flemish organic and conventional arable farmers on about 7-15 ha (EIP KIK-LOVE, relance KIKET). The results of both projects demonstrate the potential of chickpea on Flemish soil. Moreover, Flemish food companies, retail and end consumers are also interested in the local chickpea. However the cultivation is very risky and still has some cultivation challenges.
Research approach
By cooperating with conventional and organic growers, we want to optimize chickpea cultivation and make it profitable. We focus on good pest and disease recognition and the establishment of warning systems. We also focus on sowing time, suitable inocula, variety trials and effects in crop rotation. Through breeding we want to develop varieties that are determined, so that simultaneous ripening results in higher quality. Through matchmaking we want to connect the primary producer with potential buyers.
Relevance/Valorization
Through KickChick we aim to connect current pioneers in chickpea cultivation and followers. Through a better knowledge of cultivation we aim at a less risky cultivation, making it more profitable and allowing to market a high quality product. Through connection with the processing industry we want to make the efforts of the Flemish farmer known, which results in a supported valorization of the chickpea harvest.
