General introduction

The soybean acreage in Flanders is still limited due to poor chain operation and limited practical knowledge. The ImPuls project responds to this by working together with farmers and chain partners. The goal is to achieve profitable and sustainable soybean cultivation, embedded in a local context. The cultivation of vegetable proteins such as soy is gaining importance in the light of European and Flemish protein strategies. Flanders wants to reduce dependence on imported soy and is committed to local, sustainable alternatives. Soy is not only nutritious, but also enriches the soil thanks to its nitrogen-fixing properties. With ImPuls, we want to accelerate the Flemish protein transition through local, sustainable soy cultivation. Moreover, the project contributes to a future-oriented, agro-ecological agriculture in Flanders.

Research approach

ImPuls builds on more than a decade of research on soybean cultivation in Flanders. We disseminate agronomic knowledge through a learning network of farmers and experiment with cultivation techniques. At the same time, together with processors and buyers, we explore new sales channels for locally grown soy. Economic and ecological analyses support the establishment of sustainable chains. Through pilot projects and practical guidance, we set concrete innovations in motion. In this way we link knowledge sharing to tangible innovation in the field and in the chain.

Relevance/Valorization

By strengthening the entire chain - from grower to consumer - we create economic added value as well as environmental gains. Local soy reduces the ecological footprint and strengthens food security. Consumers are actively involved through campaigns such as 'Legume Week'. The accumulated knowledge and networks ensure lasting impact after the project.
