General introduction

In 2024, problems with foliar nematodes were first identified in strawberry cultivation. These nematodes caused significant crop damage: plants grew poorly and even died, and leaves and fruits were deformed, leading to significant production losses. Although foliar nematodes had been described for some time, this pest and its management were unknown to strawberry growers and advisors. In the ESBBA project, researchers are mapping how the nematodes spread. The aim is to develop control protocols, with hygiene measures that slow down nematode damage to strawberries.

Research approach

During the project, detailed information is collected on the spread of foliar nematodes in Flanders and at the farm level to better describe the problem. Control strategies such as heat and curative treatments will be developed and evaluated under practical conditions. A detailed protocol with recommendations for hygiene measures to prevent the spread of foliar nematodes is also developed.

Relevance/Valorization

Foliar nematodes cause significant production losses in the strawberry sector. The researchers intend to disseminate their findings extensively among the growers concerned and other stakeholders. There will be demonstration events, popular publications, and coaching. The ultimate goal is to provide growers with sound initial advice on how to recognize, prevent, and as needed, address foliar nematodes in strawberries.
