General introduction

This project accelerates the use of the KLIMREK method for pig farming. The aim is to give pig farmers individual guidance about implementing feasible climate-smart measures on their farms. 'Climate-smart' measures either reduce net greenhouse gas emissions or make the farm more climate-proof. New climate measures are developed with the help of practical centers and new climate consultants for pig farming are being trained.

Research approach

The VLAIO-LA Klimrek project has already established climate trajectories for different subsectors of agriculture in Flanders (dairy farming, arable farming and pig farming). They follow the international LCA standards and refine the calculations in the Flemish practical context. In the demo project we will immerse new pig farms in the methodology, with applications and calculations at farm level. Additional climate consultants will be trained at the partners and the climate trajectories will be extended with additional climate measures.

Relevance/Valorization

The added value of this approach is that pig farmers are supported in their transition to more climate-resilient and climate-friendly operations. They get individual guidance and learn from their fellow farmers. The pig sector gains a broader view of the climate contribution of Flemish pig farms and can more accurately assess its potential for greenhouse gas reduction. The practical guide for climate-smart management will be further expanded.
