What about by-products from cichorium crops?
VIB and ILVO lead the development of this regional platform consisting of phenotyping under controlled conditions and in the field, with a research focus on drought/salinity adaptation of crops in the frame of climate change.
EMPHASIS-Belgium - “phenotyping the future crops”
This project therefore posed an essential question with a phytosanitary impact: what can be done in the introduction of unprecedented/new diseases when these crops are grown in the vicinity of the ' traditional ' commercial crops?
Phytosanitary risks of newly introduced crops
Main research questionHow can arable farmers, poultry farmers and the local animal feed industry in Flanders work with crops mixed with legumes, as an alternative source of protein for poultry? This question is answered in a chain perspective, within the OPTIPLUIM project. The aim is to look at cultivation, processing and use.
Optimal cultivation of protein crops for poultry feeding
Main research questionWhiteflies such as Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci are devastating, cosmopolitan pests on greenhouse crops such as tomato or cucumber and cause annual yield losses of more than 1 billion euro worldwide.

Potential of innovative (mixed) crops and cultivation techniques shown at second PPAE demo day in Hansbeke
Trials with mixed crops of a production crop with a legume were a success.
This requires a systematic approach to water in agriculture, in which the use of drought-tolerant crops plays an important role.
Breeding is a continuous process in which new, better, or adapted varieties are developed within certain crops (including plant species). For example, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is a crop with good feed quality that can be improved in terms of drought through breeding.

ILVO IS COMMITTED TO:
Healthy crops: Diseases and pests
The health of plants is mostly determined by the presence or absence of harmful organisms, but also through the sensitivity and defense capabilities of the plants.
The agri-food system of the future must be both ecologically and socio-economically resilient and it must supply healthy food crops and food products. The most sustainable production is achieved by striving for optimal plant, animal and soil health. That is ILVO's goal.
