ILVO takes first steps to map spread of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance through manure
ILVO has developed a method that makes it possible to map the distribution of antibiotics via manure into the environment.
Main research questionThis project focuses on a more responsible use of antibiotics in animal production systems, in particular on how to efficiently steer and manage this transition in order to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Relevance/ValorizationIn conclusion, we observed that manure used for fertilization, especially from pigs and veal calves, often contains several antibiotic residues and multidrug resistant (possibly pathogenic) bacteria, such as E. coli resistant to antibiotics which are critically important in human medicine.
Our main focus has been on the validation of tests for the detection of antibiotics in milk; however validation studies in other matrices (meat, honey, fish, etc.), as well as of other compounds (aflatoxins, colorants, etc.) have been performed. Contact: Wim Reybroeck and Katrien Broekaert.
Screening lab Contact: Wim Reybroeck In the laboratory for antibiotic screening, foodstuffs can be screened using microbiological tests for the presence of inhibitory substances (mainly antibiotics and chemotherapeutics).

Furthermore, the methods used to house animals, animal welfare issues, and the high use of antibiotics are coming under fire. Precision livestock farming is one of the ways to increase the sustainability (social, economic, and ecological) of livestock breeding.
