Research project ParticipatOry, Open citizen research for sustainable Nutrition

General introduction

Through participatory Citizen Science Labs (CSLs), the research project SPOON engages citizens as active drivers of food system change toward greater food security, and greater resilience, equity and sustainability. The premise is that through such engagement, citizens can become stronger influencers of policy. The goal is behavioral change as well as maintaining control over personal data.

Research approach

SPOON deploys citizen science as a transformative tool. Citizen Science Labs serve to develop physical and digital platforms where citizens co-create research projects, collect and analyze data, and generate insights about local food systems. Innovative digital tools will be developed and tested, for example, tools to make data collection and analysis accessible. Important is the emphasis on cross-sector collaborations: Partnering with policymakers, scientists and businesses to jointly realize behavioral interventions and policy recommendations.

Relevance/Valorization

SPOON offers an innovative approach to food insecurity by actively engaging citizens. This increases understanding of local food systems and promotes sustainable consumption. SPOON contributes to data-driven policy and strengthens collaboration across sectors. It aligns seamlessly with global initiatives, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal, and supports the transition to fair, sustainable and health-oriented food systems.
