Research project Data-economie for the Flemish agrifoodsector

General introduction

The COOCK project 'DATA-ECONOMY FOR THE FLEMISH AGRIFOOD SECTOR' will develop an integrated data-economy toolkit to make it easier for Flemish companies to optimally valorize their data. The transition to a data economy offers opportunities, but at the same time requires extra steps in terms of technology and data exchange architecture (Is the governance and data regulations in place?). Companies need support regarding a sector-specific translation of European data legislation. The project stimulates cooperation between companies by linking data-driven business models to applicable technology and by providing insight into the impact of regulations and governance on data exchange.

Research approach

The integrated data economy toolkit, now under development, consists of three parts: a roadmap for business models, a technology radar and a legislative roadmap, specifically tailored to Flemish companies in the agri-food sector. This toolkit supports companies in implementing data-driven innovations, helps them understand the impact of regulations, and facilitates collaboration within and outside of the sector.

Relevance/Valorization

By 2030, the European Commission expects the data economy to account for 5.8% of EU GDP, or €851 billion. Encouraging Flemish companies to actively engage with data and data sharing not only creates individual benefits, but also strengthens network effects. This accelerates innovation, increases efficiency within the chain and facilitates sustainable applications, for example around climate adaptation. By supporting companies in this transition, the project contributes to a fair and competitive Flemish data economy.
