On October 23, 2017, Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature and Agriculture Joke Schauvliege launched the "Water-Land-Schap" program. This program is a new methodology to solve problems with water in rural areas, in close cooperation with the users of the area, such as farmers. With the call Water-Land-Schap, local coalitions had the opportunity to submit their initiatives to the Flemish Land Agency, secretary of the program team Water-Land-Schap.

The call resulted in 40 submitted proposals. These were evaluated by a jury consisting of the program team, including ILVO, and experts in the field of water, agriculture and landscape. From these, 14 have now been selected:
  • West-Flanders: “De Gaverbeekvallei: een klimaatbestendig landschap” – “Robuuste Waterlopen Westhoek” – “Robuuste waterlopen Westhoek” – “Naar een duurzaam productielandschap”
  • East-Flanders: “Barbierbeek verbindt” – “Water-Land-Schap de Maarkebeek” – “Burenwater”
  • Antwerp: “Aqualitatieve Mechelse groenteregio” – “Beek. Boer. Bodem.

The selected initiatives will form the basis of a land development project, for which a total of 5 million euros has been provided. The local coalitions of the selected initiatives will now work with the program team to concretize their proposal and prepare for implementation. The Water-Land-Schap program will run until 2020.
