Research project EU Reference Laboratory for plant parasitic nematodes

General introduction
The European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Plant-parasitic Nematodes is one of the five reference laboratories for Plant Health in the EU. These EURLs were established in 2019 to protect the health of crops, green space and forests. The EURL for Plant-parasitic Nematodes is a consortium between the laboratories of ILVO and ANSES (France), both having extensive experiences in diagnostics of harmful nematodes. The goal is to share that knowledge with labs in the other EU member states.
Research approach
ILVO nematologists assist National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) of each EU member state in implementing European Plant Health Regulations by providing them with the knowledge and tools for accurate detection and identification of regulated plant-parasitic nematodes. Some examples: validated diagnostic protocols, training in microscopic and molecular identification, annual workshops, proficiency tests for detection and identification of quarantine nematodes, and a searchable collection of live reference nematodes and their DNA. We also assist the European Commision, EPPO and EFSA when they have questions concerning plant-parasitic nematodes.
Relevance/Valorization
The activities of the EURL for Plant-parasitic nematodes have already resulted in improved harmonized diagnostic performance of the EU member states. There is also an increased exchange of nematological knowledge and ideas between NRLs, the EURL and EU. The developed synergies between diagnostic labs in Europe will contribute to early and better detection of harmful nematodes within or entering the EU.
