General introduction

To what extent do (harmful) soil nematodes adapt and pose a threat to resistant potato varieties? The GLOBEVO project answers that question by mapping the current situation of potato cyst nematodes in Belgium. In past years , potato cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida) have been detected in Belgian potato fields. They can cause severe yield losses. The most susceptible varieties such as Bintje were replaced by resistant varieties. In other countries, nematologists found that nematode populations adapt and learn to bypass resistance in potato plants.

Research approach

Soil samples are collected from potato fields whether G. pallida is more prevalent than before, especially where varieties with resistance to G. rostochiensis have been grown for many years. We look for nematode populations with increased virulence through analysis of the number of eggs in the cysts. The most suspicious cysts are tested in a controlled bioassay. We inform potato growers preventively about the optimal application of resistance and about the importance of monitoring cyst infestation via self-monitoring in the field.

Relevance/Valorization

The quarantine status of the potato cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida, means that if they are found in a field, they must be prevented from reproducing. This can be done by cultivating (resistant) varieties where the nematodes cannot reproduce or are severely limited in reproduction.
The future performance of potato cultivation in Belgium partly depends on the correct control of pests and diseases. These nematodes have been considered less of an acute problem in recent years. When these quarantine organisms, as feared by the experts, reappear due to the wrong choice of varieties or a breakthrough in resistance, it is important to act quickly. The researchers believe it is important to make growers aware of the nematode threat. With this three-year project, they are surveying the current situation to make timely recommendations.
