In the media 'Food companies forget farmers in sustainability report'
It's good that food companies and retailers are producing sustainability reports that say how much less water and energy they use. But in such sustainability reports I would also like to read how they dealt with their main suppliers; the farmers.
That's what Administrator-General Joris Relaes of ILVO stated during the Belgian potato fair Interpom. "Do they have a fair relationship with farmers? That should be an integral part of the sustainability strategy of food companies."
He called for more respect for farmers. "The agricultural sector is the only sector that produces living material. There are a lot of risks involved, such as climate, plant diseases, animal diseases... But we should not hold the agriculture and horticulture sector responsible for this alone, there is a whole chain behind it."
