Soil Health Conference - World Soil Day
Program
8h30 - Open doors
9h00 - Knowledge erosion about soilsHistorical research reveals that the very foundation of current agronomy may be more shaky than we thought Which promising fields of research were abandoned at the start of the 20 th century?
In Europe 60 70 of soils have been diagnosed as ‘non healthy’healthy’( 2020 Flanders is no exception The health of agricultural soils is crucial, not only for sustainable food production but also for the provision of ecosystem services A growing number of farmers all over the world demonstrate that it is possible to achieve rapid improvements in soil
Research projects
Main research questionHow do adapted soil management practices, particularly mulching and reduced tillage, (beneficially) affect water evaporation, infiltration and retention, as an adaptation mechanism against extreme weather conditions, in the Flemish agricultural context? This research question gets an answer in Soilstruct.
Structured soil, climate-smart soil management
Research projects
Main research questionThe MiCoS project, a collaboration between Ghent University and ILVO and financed by ERC, wants to define the effects of microplastics on soil and plant health by working on three scales: risk assessment, risk-based testing and risk reduction.

Standard pages
The BELAC-accredited physico-chemical lab for mineral soils, potting soil, soil improvers and crops performs chemical analyses on plant material, mineral soils, potting soil and soil improvers.
The lab is also certified by Flanders Government for soil analyses as set out in the fertilizer regulations.

EJP Soil Science Days and General Meeting
The European Joint Programme for Soil brings together its consortium (26 scientific institutes from 24 European countries), external scientists and policymakers in its yearly meeting, to exchange knowledge, present results and to inspire furtjer research. This year, the meeting takes place in Riga, Latvia, from 12 to 16 June.
Research projects
Main research questionAt the start of the 4-year VLAIO research project "Preventing and Remedying Soil Compaction" in 2019, soil compaction was still only marginally on the radar of farmers, contractors and processors.
Prevention and remediation of soil compaction
Research projects
Main research questionWhich reward mechanisms work best to promote farming practices that stimulate soil health in Europe, and how can they get more widespread implementation? This is the central question in the SoilValues project, approved under the Soil Mission.
Enhancing soil health through values-based business models
