Main research questionBASTA envisages producing biochar from residual biomass resulting in an economically valuable and sustainable end product for applications in (1) manure and biomass processing; (2) growing media; and (3) open fields.

In addition, for the cultivation of ornamentals in open field, mainly farm manure is used; a carbon source and soil improver with a narrow base. Growers of ornamentals are also now required to adapt crop protection schemes, with implementation of IPM (integrated pest management), such as the use of commercially available micro-organisms.

Desealing as a way to gain open space
The general objective is to protect (qualitative) open space in peri-urban areas under pressure from urban sprawl and to promote economic regional development in a sustainable way.
The development of the scarce open space in Flanders is now hardly on the policy agenda. Scientifically supported spatial concepts can strategically support this development.Research approachResearch by design is actually “thinking through designing”.
The routes take place in a garden in the Pajottenland-Zenne Valley region, where there is space for vegetable plots, a greenhouse, a water basin, fruit trees, berries and space for small animals.
