Main research questionIn the Pasture Protection project, we are determining which tree species and shrub plantings are most adequate as shelter for animals kept outdoors, and which, in addition to having a good effect on animal welfare, also score in terms of forage value, wind resistance and exposure to soil compaction.

ILVO has years of experience in collecting both biological and ecosystem data with the objective to provide biological advice for the European Common Fisheries Policy. The focus is on the Belgian fisheries and its fished species and areas.
Maize crop residues crucial for carbon in the soil
The root biomass of maize contributes - relatively speaking - twice or even three times as much to the build-up of stable soil organic matter in the soil as the above-ground crop residues (maize straw) do.
