Rural development in urbanized Flanders

The presence of human and intellectual capital offers many opportunities for the development of open space. We can therefore consider open space or the countryside as an important resource, with an intrinsic power to stimulate transitions and innovations.

This term refers to the (sub)urban areas that fulfill many functions, where urban and rural areas are not strictly separated but rather interlinked. In the the “Flemish Metropolis” everyone has easy access to open space. That brings opportunities as well as challenges.

Development of a quick scan monitoring system at the slaughter line to determing laying hen welfare

The members stay in close contact throughout the development process of the monitoring tool. Appropriate animal welfare indicators are identified for the various stages of the production process (production, catch & transport, slaughter). The limiting factor is that the measurement must be implemented at the slaughterhouse.

The development of innovative monitoring systems to reliably and energy-efficiently gather data, and the use and implementation of innovative tools to analyse the huge amount of data that will become available on a farm, all will contribute to an accurate analysis and subsequently optimization of the animals’ (re)production, health and welfare status
