Research project Visserij Verduurzaamt – finalization cycle 2

General introduction

Visserij Verduurzaamt - finalization cycle 2 (VV C2) is a joint project of ILVO and the Rederscentrale and builds on the findings from the Visserij Verduurzaamt Support I and II projects. The objective is to continue and complete this second 3 year assessment cycle and provide further guidance to the shipowners. Participation with the sector remains an important asset of Visserij Verduurzaamt. The ambition remains to engage the participation of as many vessels/shipowners as possible and contribute to a more sustainable fishery.

Research approach

In order to complete the second cycle of the Visserij Verduurzaamt-trajectory, we will again use the sustainability assessments of the VALDUVIS system. Shipowners will also be further guided via an improvement trajectory. We evaluate the implementation and operation of VALDUVIS v2.0 and provide the necessary documentation. New is that ILVO and the Rederscentrale, as part of this project, also provide support to the marketing part of Visserij Verduurzaamt.

Relevance/Valorization

The close cooperation between policymakers, scientists and the fishing industry remains a very important pillar within the Visserij Verduurzaamt-trajectory. The majority of the Belgian fleet has joined the process and is taking steps towards sustainability. Two additional parallel projects are currently on-going: one developing the marketing side of Visserij Verduurzaamt and one creating a vision for the future of Visserij Verduurzaamt. ILVO will provide support to both these projects.
