General introduction

How can we turn Europe's carbon farming ambitions into credible, large-scale reality? CREDIBLE 2.0, an EU Soil Mission project that builds on the Credible project, addresses the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation by consolidating knowledge, overcoming practical barriers, and mobilising a European community of practice. CREDIBLE 2.0 will focus on translating CRCF methodologies into actionable guidance and services for certified, high-integrity carbon farming (CF) projects with two engines: the European Carbon Farming Summit, Europe’s flagship multi-actor forum and the CREDIBLE Inspirational Platform, upgraded into a one-stop hub.

Research approach

Credible 2.0 will: (i) synthesise state-of- the-art evidence across arable/perennial systems, grasslands and livestock, forestry, and peatlands, while integrating whole-farm and landscape perspectives; (ii) advance robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) by mapping public and private approaches, co-designing harmonisation roadmaps, linking data centres, and piloting secure data-sharing; and (iii) foster policy coherence and market readiness by clarifying CRCF interactions with EU climate, CAP, and corporate reporting frameworks, and by outlining fair models for investment and insetting. ILVO leads efforts to strengthen the foundations for robust and interoperable MRV systems by enhancing data flows across public and private actors, connecting data collection centres, and integrating remote and in situ data streams.

Relevance/Valorization

CREDIBLE 2.0 directly supports the implementation of the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation. ILVO's active involvement in other EU projects and regional initiatives including MARVIC, CAFAMORE, CREDIBLE, Smart Carbon Farming, SoilWise, and the Flanders Carbon Platform. Methods, tools, and knowledge developed in these initiatives feed into CREDIBLE 2.0, ensuring that cutting-edge knowledge reaches the stakeholders in carbon farming, e.g. farm advisors, practitioners, and policymakers at both EU and regional scale.
