General introduction

The VALORANT research project aims to valorize the underutilized residual streams from the horticultural sector in Northwest Europe, thereby strengthening the transition to a circular bio-economy. Horticultural residues contain valuable bioactive compounds (polyphenols) that can be incorporated into food products, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The project intends to develop a shared decision-making methodology based on pilot activities across various NWE regions, and to make this available to relevant stakeholders in various ways, thereby supporting the transition toward a more efficient use of the resources.

Research approach

For valorization, the researchers employ an integrated cascade approach. As a first step, they analyze the availability, composition, and polyphenol content of various horticultural residual streams. Subsequently, suitable extraction and processing methods are selected and optimized—on a regional basis—to convert polyphenols into proteins, biochar, biofuels or biogas. Through transnational pilot initiatives across various Northwest European regions, the technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, and sustainability of the tested valorization pathways are assessed. The results are integrated into a joint decision-making framework and translated into digital tools, training programs, and matchmaking events for stakeholders.

ILVO’s role is fourfold: mapping Flemish horticultural waste material and valorizing it into alternative proteins using micro- and macroalgae; coordinating the validation process for carrot residues; evaluating the sustainability and economic feasibility of these pathways through full life-cycle analysis and cost calculations; and translating this innovative research into scalable solutions for Flanders and other regions in Northwest Europe.

Relevance/Valorization

The project addresses the need for circular solutions and efficient resource use within the agri-food sector. Recovering polyphenols and other valuable components from waste streams reduces waste and increases the economic value of horticultural residues. Multiple high-value applications are integrated into a single valorization cascade system. The tools developed will support companies and policymakers in making sustainable investment decisions. VALORANT brings together 33 partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the United States.
