General introduction

Harnessing microalgae to build a healthier future, starting with better liver health: That is the starting point of the ALGA-CARE research project. The focus is on conditions such as MASLD and MetALD, forms of fatty liver disease that are rapidly increasing worldwide. Microalgae are a sustainable and versatile source of bioactive compounds with potentially beneficial effects on the liver. By combining marine biotechnology with medical and nutritional sciences, Alga-Care aims to make these natural resources accessible for applications that directly benefit people.

Research approach

In Alga-Care, microalgae are specifically engineered to produce specific bioactive compounds using the OSMAC strategy (One Strain, Many Compounds). The bioactive compounds produced are isolated and thoroughly analyzed using advanced analytical technologies. Their effects are tested in innovative liver models that closely mimic the human condition. The most promising compounds are further investigated in preclinical studies. In addition, the project is developing formulations that protect the bioactive compounds from digestion in the stomach and deliver them directly to the liver to enhance absorption and efficacy.

Relevance/Valorization

The project responds to the growing demand for natural and sustainable health products and creates opportunities for the development of new dietary supplements and nutraceuticals focused on liver health. This offers prospects for companies in the food sector, biotechnology, and microalgae production. Collaboration with industry and clusters accelerates the path to market introduction. The emphasis on prevention can contribute to a healthier society and help reduce healthcare costs in the long term.
