Research project Resilient and climate-conscious management of the variability in the microbiological load of dry plant-based raw materials in operations
General introduction
How can research help control and reduce microbial contamination in dry plant-based raw materials such as soybeans, yellow peas, and dried beans? This is the question addressed in the CFU_CROPS_DRY research project. The (growing) Flemish sector of plant-based protein-rich food raw materials is seeing significant fluctuations in this microbiological load, which leads to challenges in processing. The goal of CFU_CROPS_DRY is to better understand the sources of variation in bacteria and fungi and how these are influenced by growing conditions, climatic factors, and post-harvest processes. The project also aims to develop practical mitigation strategies and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) & GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) guidelines.
Research approach
CFU_CROPS_DRY tracks soybeans, yellow peas, and dry beans from the field through the initial processing stages. Samples are collected from Flemish farmers and post-harvest processors during storage, sorting, cleaning, and initial processing. In addition, targeted field trials are being set up to test potential mitigation strategies. All microbiological data are mapped and processed into integrated insights and predictive models. In parallel, a learning network is being developed in which farmers, companies, and researchers actively exchange knowledge and experiences.
Relevance/Valorization
The microbiological contamination of beans and pods means that the companies involved (farmers, storage and processing companies, and other stakeholders in the Flemish plant protein crop supply chain) are confronted with processes that are difficult to predict, as well as increased risks of food safety issues, quality loss, and economic damage. For them, it is beneficial that this research project translates the intended new scientific insights into practical applications in a targeted manner. When their raw materials have a high microbiological load, companies will be able to adjust their processes in a timely manner using predictive models and a scientifically grounded approach. CFU_CROPS_DRY is developing a user-friendly digital application that allows farmers and processors to explore various scenarios on their own. In addition, clear guidelines are being established for good agricultural and processing practices. Individual farmers and companies receive feedback reports with concrete areas for improvement.
