Research project Optimization of feed structure to improve health and performance of chickens and pigs
General introduction
The physical structure of animal feed directly influences the growth, feed conversion, and gastrointestinal health of chickens and pigs. However, there is still too little specific knowledge about how particle size and fiber fractions—the size of the ground particles and the type of dietary fiber—interact in animal performance and welfare. OPTIFEST aims to develop this (fundamental) knowledge and translate it into practical applications. The ultimate goal is to develop feeds that simultaneously enhance efficiency, animal health, and sustainability.Â
Research approach
The project combines nutritional, technological, and animal health insights to develop structurally optimized feed products. State-of-the-art analysis technology is used to map feed structure more quickly and reliably. The Feed Pilot at ILVO investigates how grinding and mixing settings and the pellet process influence the particle size and fiber structure of feed. Data on feed structure, animal performance, health, and microbiota (the composition of intestinal microorganisms) is collected at commercial farms, supplemented by targeted validation tests on chickens and pigs. Methodological work is also planned: the project is developing a NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) model to quickly and reliably predict feed structure during production.Â
Relevance/Valorization
The animal feed sector is expected to gain concrete tools for formulating feeds that simultaneously improve performance and animal health. An optimized feed structure reduces the risk of stomach ulcers, strengthens intestinal health, and improves feed conversion, which saves costs and reduces the ecological impact. The use of NIRS makes quality control more accessible and supports precision feeding. Thanks to the involvement of compound feed companies, premix suppliers, and sector organizations, the results are quickly put into practice and contribute to competitive, future-oriented livestock farming. In terms of dissemination, the researchers are planning several workshops, demonstrations, reports, and sector communications.Â
