General introduction

More selective treatment of non-severe cases of clinical mastitis (udder inflammation) in dairy cows can significantly reduce antibiotic use without causing any negative effects. Rapid diagnostic tests are crucial to implement this (new) practice on dairy farms. The precise practical and health effects of this new strategy in Flanders still needed to be investigated. This was established in the MELKOPC research project. Udder inflammation in dairy cows is a common and costly disease in dairy cattle, including in Flanders. Approximately 26% of dairy cows develop clinical mastitis each year. Between 60 and 70% of all antibiotics used on dairy farms are used precisely for the treatment and prevention of this udder problem.

Research approach

The research partners focused their approach on reducing mastitis in a smarter way in order to substantially reduce the associated antibiotic use and unnecessary costs. They developed an innovative treatment concept in the dairy sector. In experiments, non-severe clinical udder infections were treated with antibiotics or left untreated. The knowledge base was based on rapid bacteriological tests carried out either by the veterinarian or on the cattle farm itself. The approach was evaluated in practice at 41 dairy farms (together with their farm veterinarians) and at ILVO and the Hooibeekhoeve. The feasibility, bottlenecks, and effects of selective treatment were documented. At the same time, knowledge was shared through workshops, webinars, and farm visits.

Relevance/Valorization

The study yielded useful protocols and practical experience that help livestock farmers and veterinarians make faster, more consistent, and more targeted decisions about treatment. The knowledge gained supports the goal of more rational antibiotic use and cost control on Flemish dairy farms. Broad knowledge sharing has increased support for the use of rapid testing and selective therapy in udder health care.
