General introduction

Optifish is a Horizon Europe research initiative that develops innovative technologies for digital catch monitoring in the fishing industry. By combining AI, computer vision, robotics, and eDNA analysis, the project aims to enable real-time data collection on board fishing vessels. This helps with accurate species identification, better reporting, and regulatory compliance. This four-year project is coordinated by ILVO with 19 partners from 8 countries.

Research approach

The researchers identify the needs and practices in different fishing contexts and develop tailored tools: AI-driven image recognition, robotics for sorting, and eDNA for species identification. These tools are being integrated into systems that collect and analyze real-time catch data on board. Everything is tested and validated in five European pilot studies through co-creation with fishermen and other stakeholders. In addition, regulations, ethics, and market access are being investigated, and training, communication, and dissemination of results are provided for.

Relevance/Valorization

The relevance of OptiFish lies in its contribution to more sustainable, transparent, and better-regulated fishing practices. By providing fishers with user-friendly and reliable technologies for catch monitoring, the project supports compliance with European fisheries legislation and reduces administrative burdens. The tools help avoid unwanted bycatch and protect marine ecosystems. Valorisation is achieved through close collaboration with fishers, technology developers, and policymakers, ensuring that the solutions are practical and widely applicable. Additionally, results are shared through workshops, demonstrations, training sessions, and open communication channels, with the aim of market introduction and long-term use.
