General introduction

To what extent can leeks be grown via hydroponics instead of on the field? The research project Hydro-Leek gathers all necessary cultivation technical and economical knowledge to start the commercial-scale hydroponic cultivation of leek. Climate change and the demand for low-residue leeks are putting increasing pressure on the profitability of outdoor leek for Flemish leek growers. Conversion to hydroponic leek production systems can presents opportunities in this respect.

Research approach

This project builds on years of fundamental cultivation research by Inagro and WUR into hydroponic cultivation of leek as an alternative to open field cultivation. Hydro-Leek is committed to the development of an adapted and fully automatic cultivation system for hydroponic cultivation. Parallel projects provide the development of a harvesting robot and a design for leek carriers. Cultivation trials are conducted using Inagro's test basins where yield, quality, nutrient requirements, aeration requirements, water level and circulation, disinfection requirements and specific sub-aspects of the installation are investigated to ultimately develop a profitable cultivation system. The economic profitability and environmental sustainability of the cultivation system are examined, along with the effect of price volatility, extreme weather conditions and renewable energy.

Relevance/Valorization

The final expected result is an operational and cost-effective pilot setup for hydroponic cultivation of leek at farm scale. A cultivation manual for hydro-leek and an advisory service has already been established to support growers who want to convert. The valorisation of leek roots is being investigated in a follow-up project. Part of the leek cultivation is converted to hydroponics.
