Research project Connecting advisers to boost interactive innovation in agriculture and forestry
General introduction
With the i2connect research project, Europe has invested heavily in a network of higher-performing advisors in the agricultural sector. Their aim is to facilitate the translation of scientific insights into successful, accepted practical application by farmers. Including a comprehensive inventory of advisory organizations and hundreds of professional advisors trained to use probing interactive innovation processes, the project contributes to long-term knowledge retention and knowledge enhancement among farmers. The central characteristic of a so-called "interactive innovation process" is that actors with complementary knowledge (practical, entrepreneurial, scientific, etc.) work together and on an equal footing to find the best solutions to specific challenges. These are solutions that are then translated into practice, and disseminated to a wider audience.
Research approach
The researchers of i2connect searched for good interactive innovation practices. No fewer than 40 training sessions, along with additional learning and networking opportunities, were organized. This established a network for advisors that will facilitated interactive innovation processes. The project also studied how to promote a supportive environment within advisory services by better connecting and anchoring advisory services and through appropriate government policies. Training materials and a toolbox for consultants, policy makers and trainers have been developed.
Relevance/Valorization
The i2connect project played a key role in building a balanced and extensive European advisory network, focused on strengthening the role of advisors in the exchange of knowledge between scientific research and the agricultural sector. This promotes more productive and sustainable farming practices and rural development. Key results include an online inventory of advisory organisations in 30 countries, 30 updated AKIS country reports, and 100 practical cases of support for interactive innovation. The project contributes to long-term knowledge retention through training materials and a toolbox for consultants, policymakers and trainers.
