Research project Assessment of the risks of Dacus frontalis becoming established in Belgium, development of detection methods and a control strategy
General introduction
The pumpkin fruit fly, Dacus frontalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), is not currently present in Belgium, but may pose a phytosanitary risk in the future for the cultivation of cucurbits and other host plants. It is therefore important to improve our understanding of this species in advance. In the DAFROSTOP project, we investigate which factors may affect the introduction, establishment, and potential spread of D. frontalis in Belgium. This knowledge can support more targeted monitoring and a faster response in the event of an introduction. International trade and climate change increase the likelihood that quarantine insect pests, such as the pumpkin fruit fly, may be introduced and establish in Europe.
Research approach
We combine existing knowledge with new data from fieldwork, collections, and molecular analyses. First, we compile what is already known about the taxonomy, distribution, host plants, and ecology of Dacus frontalis. We then examine additional D. frontalis samples to better delimit the species and assess differences among populations. We also develop models to predict where the species could establish under current and future climate scenarios. Based on these results, we formulate recommendations for identification, monitoring, and management.
Relevance/Valorization
The results of this project are relevant for phytosanitary services, policymakers, and the agricultural and horticultural sectors. They provide a stronger scientific basis for risk analysis and the early detection of invasive fruit fly species. Better insight into the potential establishment, spread, and identification of D. frontalis will help to develop more targeted and efficient monitoring strategies and support a more proactive approach to plant health risks in Belgium and Europe.
