General introduction

The animal feed sector works primarily with conventional raw materials such as soybean meal, whose nutritional value is well established. For alternative protein sources, reliable information on composition, digestibility, and potential risks is often lacking. Rapid analytical techniques such as NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) have not yet been sufficiently validated for these new raw materials. As a result, inclusion rates remain low and the potential of local protein sources is not being fully realized. NUTRIVAGRO aims to close these knowledge gaps.

Research approach

NUTRIVAGRO selects relevant protein raw materials in close collaboration with the feed industry. The project combines laboratory, in vitro, and in vivo research with literature reviews, database analysis, and stakeholder interviews — mapping both measurable data and practical knowledge on feed value, compositional variation, and digestibility. It also investigates risks such as bacterial contamination, mycotoxins, and anti-nutritional factors (ANFs), and their impact on feed formulation. In vitro models are validated with in vivo data and used to develop NIRS prediction models for crude protein and amino acid digestibility, based on Weende components and in vitro methods.

Relevance/Valorization

NUTRIVAGRO provides validated data and tools that enable feed companies to correctly assess and safely apply a wider range of protein sources. This aligns with explicit needs within the sector, such as reducing dependence on imported soy. It also addresses societal challenges such as climate impact and the circular economy by enabling use of local and variable raw materials.
