Plant Sciences Unit Researcher Soil-plant modeling

Do you want to contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture? Are you fascinated by the interactions between soil and plants? Do you enjoy working with mechanistic models that shed light on complex processes? Does translating data into useful predictions energize you? And do you want to collaborate with researchers, companies, and international partners on solutions to current agricultural challenges?

Important information

  • Location: Merelbeke-Melle
  • Contract type: Full-time
  • Diploma: Master diploma
  • Application deadline Sunday 2 August 2026

Your capabilities

Conditions

  • You have a master degree in bioengineering, civil engineering, computer science, or an equivalent field. If you have a foreign diploma we ask you, upon employment, to obtain equivalence recognition. You can apply for this at NARIC Vlaanderen
  • You have 4 years of demonstrable experience processing large datasets (various types, time series, or spatial data).
  • You are familiar with programming mathematical models (e.g., in Julia, R, or Python). You have a good command of written and spoken English.

We offer

We offer you a open-ended contract with a competitive salary based on your degree. You will be appointed in salary scale A165 or A166 (depending on your degree). You can make a calculation of your monthly salary, a holiday bonus and your end-of-year allowance by Salarissimulator (note, under salary system select "volgens anciënniteit - according to seniority” as your relevant experience may be taken into account).

At ILVO, you step into a research environment where real progress is being made. You contribute to innovative research with clear societal impact, while at the same time being given the opportunity to further develop your own talents. Thanks to flexible working hours and the possibility of hybrid working (where the function allows), we work together to ensure a healthy work–life balance. We offer an attractive leave scheme, allowing you to enjoy 35 days of annual leave based on last year’s performance (private system). In addition, you do not have to work between Christmas and New Year: during this period, we close our offices so you can enjoy a well-deserved break.

Additional benefits include hospitalisation and group insurance, reimbursement of commuting costs (bicycle and public transport), meal vouchers (€8 per day) and the possibility of bicycle leasing.

In this position at ILVO’s Plant Department, you will work closely with researchers from various disciplines and with industrial and academic partners on national and European projects. Together, you will translate fundamental process insights into practical knowledge for plant breeding, soil management, and sustainable agricultural systems.

As a soil-plant modeler, you will contribute to the development and application of Functional Structural Soil-Plant Models (FSPMs). You will investigate how crops respond to water deficit, salt stress, and other environmental factors, and translate these insights into models that can be used for plant breeding, soil management, and sustainable agricultural systems.

You will continue to develop a hydraulic FSPM framework in Julia, informed by phenotyping data from field experiments. You are interested in soil-plant interactions and are motivated to delve into topics such as crop production and soil physics. You will contribute to scientific publications and help develop solutions to the challenges facing agriculture today.
